Lessons from Piper

Since Piper's signing several signs, she thought it would be nice if everyone else knew what she was saying.  So, here is our first lesson!

These are the FIVE words that she knows now.  She particularly likes doggy (and she'll sign it when she sees one, even if it's not one of hers).  And I'm very impressed (I am her mom, after all) with her ability to tell us that she's hungry or wants more to eat.  It's pretty funny because she'll alternate with "milk" and "hungry" until she's eating again.  As she learns new signs, she'll show them to you, too!

Thanks to lifeprint.com for the pictures!

The other sign that she does is "hungry".  She pats her tummy for this, which is different than the ASL version.  But that's pretty self-explanatory.

Someone asked me the other day if we were teaching her baby sign because we didn't think that she'd be able to talk.  Lots of people teach their typical kids sign because it alleviates a lot of the tantrums and allows them to express themselves much earlier than they would be able to otherwise.  While Piper will be able to talk, it might take her a little while longer since speech delay is very common among kids with Ds.  And, really?  We would have done it with her if she didn't have Ds.

...although I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt my feelings, just a little bit, that "doggy" is her favorite word, and not "mommy"....  lol...

  1. She may be small but she is smart!!! Wow!!! Our Olivia is weighing in at 17 lbs. at just 5 days older than Piper. She may have Piper beat in size... but Piper is one smart cookie!!! :-) Olivia is just beginning to sign. She signs EAT (go figure!), UP, DRINK, and she indicates that she wants to do Itsy Bitsy Spider. We have been working on Mom and Dad, but no interest in signing those yet. My husband swears that Olivia said "Hello" today. I have to admit, that it did sound that way! And I have heard her cry out "Mommy'.... but that is my imagination! :-)
